Independence isn't a personality trait. It's a set of small skills, practiced daily, that add up to a child who trusts themselves. The Montessori phrase 'help me to do it myself' is the whole method in six words.
Set up the environment
Children can only do what the environment lets them do. A step stool at the sink. A low hook for their coat. A drawer of their own dishes. A basket of snacks they can reach. When the environment says yes, the child does, too.
Small daily wins
- Pouring their own water from a small pitcher
- Buttering their own toast
- Wiping up a spill without shame or fanfare
- Choosing their clothes the night before
- Putting shoes away in the same spot every time
- Feeding a pet on a simple schedule
The hardest part: waiting
It is always faster to do it for them. Independence is built in the extra ninety seconds you don't intervene. If you can bite your tongue and sit on your hands, you are doing the work.
