A school tour is a small window into a place where your child will spend thousands of hours. The websites all look the same. The tours often sound the same. The differences are in what you notice and what you ask.
What to watch
Pay attention to the children before you listen to the adults. In a healthy classroom, children look engaged rather than entertained. They move around with purpose. Teachers speak to them quietly and at eye level. The room is orderly but not sterile — real work is happening.
Questions worth asking
The best questions aren't about programs — they're about people and philosophy:
- How long have your teachers been here?
- How do you handle a child who is struggling — academically or socially?
- What does a typical morning look like from a child's point of view?
- How do you communicate with parents day-to-day?
- How do you handle transitions between age groups?
- What happens on the hardest days — illness, big feelings, conflict?
Green flags
Long teacher tenure. Calm classrooms. Real, unhurried answers to your questions. A director who knows the children by name. Outdoor time in every weather. Parents who linger at pickup because they like being there.
